5G Core (SA) - Architecture, SBI and Call Flows

From NF registration to a working PDU session

Who this is for

Engineers moving from 4G EPC into 5G standalone, and anyone who has read the specs but has never watched the messages go past on a real core.

What you will be able to do

  • Read a full registration and PDU session establishment trace without a cheat sheet
  • Explain what the NRF is doing when an AMF looks for an SMF, and why NF Set ID exists
  • Follow N1, N2, N4 and the SBI interfaces and say which one carries which decision
  • Debug a failed session by working backwards from the reject cause

Prerequisites

Working knowledge of IP networking and either 4G EPC or a general telecom background. We cover HTTP/2 and JSON from first principles, so no prior web experience is needed.

How the labs work

You get access to our own 5G core. Every procedure in the syllabus is one you run yourself and capture, so what you learn is what actually happens on the wire, not what a slide claims happens.

Syllabus

Week 1

3 lessons

Week 2

3 lessons
  • HTTP/2, JSON and the SBI in practiceStreams, HPACK, the 3GPP URI structure and what a real Namf_Communication request looks like.28:00
  • NF profiles, NF Instance ID and NF Set IDHow an NF describes itself to the NRF, and why Set and Region identifiers make failover possible.20:00
  • NRF discovery end to endRegistration, heartbeat, discovery query, and the caching that stops the NRF becoming a bottleneck.29:00

Week 3

3 lessons
  • Initial registration, message by messageFrom RRC setup through N2 Initial UE Message to the Registration Accept.19:00
  • Identities: SUPI, SUCI, 5G-GUTI, GUAMIWhere each identity is created, who may see it, and how concealment actually works.30:00
  • Authentication with 5G-AKAAUSF and UDM roles, the SUCI de-concealment step, and how the anchor key is derived.18:00

Week 4

2 lessons
  • NAS security mode and key hierarchyFrom K to KAUSF to KSEAF to KAMF, and what a security mode command really negotiates.27:00
  • Subscription data and UDM/UDRAccess and mobility subscription data, session management subscription data, and the slice selection data behind them.21:00

Week 5

3 lessons
  • PDU session establishmentThe full flow: UL NAS transport, SMF selection, N4 session establishment, N2 resource setup.30:00
  • PFCP and the N4 interfacePDRs, FARs, QERs and URRs - the four rules that describe everything the UPF does to a packet.30:00
  • UPF selection and the user planeAnchor UPF, I-UPF, uplink classifiers, and why placement decides your latency budget.24:00

Week 6

2 lessons
  • QoS in 5G: flows, not bearersQFI, 5QI, the QoS rules the UE gets, and how a GBR flow differs from non-GBR.21:00
  • Policy control with the PCFNpcf policy association, PCC rules, and how a policy decision reaches the UPF.19:00

Week 7

3 lessons
  • Xn and N2 handoverBoth handover types side by side, and what happens to the tunnels during each.23:00
  • Service request and idle modeCM-IDLE to CM-CONNECTED, paging, and RRC inactive.21:00
  • Network slicing in the coreS-NSSAI, NSSF, allowed and configured NSSAI, and slice specific NF selection.19:00

Week 8

2 lessons
  • Reading a failure: reject causes that matterThe dozen 5GMM and 5GSM causes you will actually meet, and what to check for each.23:00
  • Troubleshooting workshopA broken core, a packet capture, and a method for finding the fault in under ten minutes.29:00

Common questions

How do I get access after I pay?

Pay by UPI, upload the payment screenshot on your order page, and we verify it and send your login details by email and WhatsApp - usually within a few hours.

Which course should I start with?

If you are new to the core network, start with 4G LTE and EPC. If you already know 4G, go straight to 5G Core. Not sure? Message us on WhatsApp and we will suggest one.

Can I watch on my phone?

Yes. Lessons play in the browser on any phone, tablet or laptop - there is nothing to install.

How are the lessons released?

Week by week from your start date, with a short quiz after each module so you can check your understanding.

Do I need my own lab or equipment?

No. Every procedure is shown on our own live core, with the real messages and traces, so you can follow along without any equipment.

Can you train my whole team?

Yes. We run corporate batches with a syllabus built around your technology and your rollout. See Corporate training, or contact us.

Ready to start?

Tell us where you are today and what you want to be working on in six months. We will point you at the right track - and be honest if we are not the right fit.
